Walk in the Ways and Laws of God

Job 12:23-25, He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again. He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way. They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.


The very first document establishing a government in American was the Mayflower Compact.


“IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, etc. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honour of our King and Country, a Voyage to plant the first Colony in the northern Parts of Virginia; Do by these Presents, solemnly and mutually, in the Presence of God and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid: And by Virtue hereof do enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions, and Offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general Good of the Colony; unto which we promise all due Submission and Obedience. IN WITNESS whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape-Cod the eleventh of November, in the Reign of our Sovereign Lord King James, of England, France, and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth, Anno Domini; 1620.”


This document declares that the New World was being established for the "Glory of God” and the advancement of the “Christian Faith.”


A few hundred years later, this colony would declare its independence and use the argument “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” They believed that God, our Creator, has given us rights that could not be taken away by any legislative body. The Constitution of all 50 states makes reference to God and our currency claims that it is Him, and not our riches, in which we place our trust.


All but two of our presidents, eighty-eight percent of the current House of Representatives, and eighty-two percent of the Senate claim to be Christians. Understanding all of this, you would think our nation would be fulfilling the idea behind its founding, to bring "Glory to God.” So why does it appear we are becoming so ungodly?


The Psalmist tells us in Psalms 78 that the children of Israel...

vs. 10 They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;

vs. 11 And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.


As a nation, we can look back on the protection and blessings of God, but so could Israel. The majority of our people and even our leaders claim to believe in God, but so did Israel. As we look at our institutions, we see they have forgotten the roots of our founding and in many cases scorn these ideas. Most importantly, when we look at the church, we see like in Revelation 3, Christ on the outside trying to get in. Let’s walk in the ways and laws of God that might move Him to increase this great nation.
