Cherish Your Mother—While You Still Can

Staci Gainor

Mother’s Day is a special time to reflect on the blessing of our mothers and the love they have poured into our lives. From the earliest days of childhood to the challenges of adulthood, many of us can point to moments where our moms stood by us, prayed for us, and gave of themselves so we could thrive. The Bible tells us plainly, “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” (Exodus 20:12) This isn’t just a commandment—it’s a calling to live with gratitude and respect for the women who gave us life and nurtured us.

Of course, relationships can be complicated. Some may carry the weight of misunderstandings, past hurts, or long seasons of distance. But as followers of Christ, we are also called to forgive, to seek peace, and to pursue healing where it’s possible. Honoring your mother doesn’t mean pretending everything was perfect—it means recognizing her humanity, her sacrifices, and the love she gave the best way she knew how. Extending grace and kindness can be the first step toward restoration and peace in your heart, and maybe even in your relationship.

This Mother’s Day, let’s choose to cherish our moms in a meaningful way. You don’t need to buy a fancy gift or spend a lot of money—just a simple card with a sincere, handwritten note can mean more than anything money could buy. Tell her what she means to you. Thank her for what she’s done. If your mom is no longer here, consider taking time to reflect on her legacy or write out a letter of remembrance. Whatever your story may be, honor the role your mother has played in it, and let gratitude lead the way.
